If you change the name of a Linux computer, your have to set the hostname correctly so that the initialization routines pick it up properly.

On Mandriva systems, the relevant file to edit (as root) is /etc/sysconfig/network . This file should contain the fully qualified domain name of the machine (ie, mps-pcxx.ucsf.edu). This file might be elsewhere on other linux systems.

I am not sure if this will also change the /etc/hosts file to set the new hostname as aliases for localhost. Take a look at /etc/hosts and if it still has the old names in the first line as aliases for localhost, then change them to the new name.
